Lets Talk About Mental Health

I have been battling with my mental health since I was 15 years old. And the sad truth is, you never really get over it.. you will always be sensitive and that is something that I have come to terms with.

There are a few reasons why I wanted to write this post. I don't think I have ever dedicated a whole post to mental health, preferring to mention the topic in slight within a 'life update' post due to the fear of sounding moan-y or worse... Attention seeking is a phrase that often comes hand in hand with mental health and despite the fact that it drives me CRAY (because why would people want to glorify it?) I know that it's due to the lack of knowledge about the subject itself. When people have little information or understanding they form their own opinions, which may differ if they were better educated.

I spent a long time battling with my mental health before telling anybody, because I was afraid of what other people would think. I remember being called into the Deputy Headteacher's office aged 16 for a 'friendly chat' where I was interrogated about concerns that both teachers and pupils had raised about my mental health- and the worst part was that I denied everything. Back in 2012 mental health was rarely discussed, I hadn't heard anybody talk openly about their experiences therefore I assumed that I was all alone. I can honestly say that I have never felt more lonely, and looking back it breaks my heart.

Ironically, the best thing that I ever did was speak out about my problems. As naff as it sounds, a problem shared really is a problem halved. But as grateful as I am of my friends and family, sometimes you need to write things down and forget about them.

Despite being referred to as a gob on a stick for the duration of my teenage years (thanks Grandad) I have always struggled with talking about 'serious' things in a face to face situation and that is where the 'personal' category of my blog comes in to play. When I first created my little online space back in 2014 I had no idea that it would blossom into this... I used to want to fill my site with fashion and beauty content (which YES I still get an undeniable amount of joy out of) but over time I have sought comfort in the fact that I can word vomit my thoughts onto a page and I don't really have to think about the consequences. Talking to strangers is quite possibly the best therapy of all.

Engaging in conversation about MH is crucial in promoting a sense of connectedness, in hope that somebody will find reassurance in your words then giving them the confidence to open up about their experiences too. I have found that by talking to somebody about a problem it has prevented it from becoming unmanageable, allowing a resolution to be conjured up (with the help of said person, because my friends are absolute babes)

I know that like all mental health conditions my anxiety will never go away, and the chances are I will always be slightly unhappy with what I see when I look in the mirror; but I have high hopes that as time goes on I will get stronger and my mental health will no longer have the ability to control me.

  1. Love this post! MH has such a negative stigma attached to it and so many people who aren't aware often label symptoms of certain disorders or speaking out about mental health itself as "attention seeking" and that has to stop! So glad you ended up realising the importance of talking about it, great post :) xx

  2. I love this post. I suffer from PTSD and really bad anxiety and there is such a stigma towards it. The more people talk the better it will be!
