The Art of Unplugging

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if you could revert back to childhood? Countless hours spent playing with your most loved toys, playing dress-up in clothes ten times too big and drifting off to sleep to the sound of your parents reading you a bedtime story? Those are the memories that I cherish most.

Unlike those growing up today, I did not have an iPad, nor a laptop screen to stare at for hours on end; I relished in the fact that I could do whatever I wanted (within reason of course) and would not be influenced by those who filled the internet. Granted, you would often find me watching the likes of Cinderella in awe, but I was nothing more than an innocent child, dreaming of a my fairytale castle.

Today I find myself longing for those days. Now don't get me wrong, I am a social media fiend.. I spend copious amounts of time logged onto the worldwide web and would be telling porkies if I even contemplated denying it. However with this in mind, I am the first to admit that sometimes it is unbearably hard to switch off. I wrote a post some time ago about the importance of switching off your gadgets before you go to sleep, but recently I have found my mind drifting towards my online self when I should be doing something far better with my time.. I am anything but focused, therefore need to make a conscious effort to balance my time between on and off-line.

What is unplugging you ask? No doubt it means something a little different to each of us, but for me it's about making time to sit down first thing in the morning to get on with some 'life admin' so for the rest of the day I can take things in my stride. Scrolling through your news feeds has been proven to stimulate brain activity, meaning that even if you think you're taking some time out from your day to day activities and chilling out, you are doing the complete opposite.

I can't stress enough how important it is to take time away from your desk and switch off (quite literally!) whether it's for a mere 10 minutes or the entirety of your lunch break. CHILL.

  1. I agree with you. nowadays we are more inclined to internet, surf thing online, viewing and scrolling through feeds of friends. In these all, I too miss my childhood, playing with toys, asking silly questions to mom like why cow has four legs and we have only two. This is really silly, I laugh when I remember this one. I really wish to unplug myself from these busy days and to go back to childhood days.

  3. usually a good book or movie is perfect for me and more than that, spending the entire day outside, walking, do a little bit of gardening or go taking picture outside is great for me!

  4. Love the post! I completely agree with you. Blogging is turning into my full time job which I love. But I figured that if I am really taking a break, I need to step aways from the screens completely and just relax.
